OK Folks, you asked for it. The return of the Cube Chronicles. If I get fired, I hope you'll give me housing and feed me. Enjoy and know that this is all true. Nothing has been altered except the names of the Soap Ladies (of course, they would insist on anonymity). This is a long post, but worth reading because it is so freaking unbelievable.

One of the first emails regarding soap collection from December 2007:

To the 105 women who share the 6th Floor Restroom:
It's time again to collect for restroom supplies for the 6th floor women's restroom. The collection envelope will be on the OHDAP door all week. Last month we collected $37.00; which didn't carry us through the entire month as we ran out of soap around the 3rd week of the month. If everyone would try to donate at least .50 cents it will allow us to provide hand soap for the entire month. Thanks to everyone who was so generous last month.

HI Soap Lady #1,

I appreciate all the work you all are doing to keep the restroom in a fresher state, and I have one suggestion for you. With thoughts of the environment and waste in mind, would you consider buying liquid soap in bulk and refilling the plastic containers? The soap refills would probably be cheaper than always buying individual bottles. I am not sure you can get refills for the brands you are buying right now, but I know you can get bags of refills at Target with their Method line (they have nice scents like lavender, etc.) If you consider that idea and want help with the refilling, I would be happy to take on that role.

Anyway, that’s my two cents.

The Soap Collection Saga Begins Again (on November 4, 2008 mind you, the date of one of the most important elections in history) :
Hello everyone it is that time again, to collect money or soap for the 6th floor women’s restroom; the envelope will be taped to the OHDAP door near the elevators and the soap box will be at the entrance of the door. Thanks to everyone who contributes. So far we have only collected $9.00 and no soap at all; just a friendly reminder we are only collecting until Friday.

Since everyone is sharing their sentiments on the bathroom soaps, I’d like to share mine.
Firstly, I’d like to personally Thank Soap Lady #1 and Soap Lady #2 for even TRYING to make our bathroom experience a pleasant one. For I’ve gone in there to many times and had to just turn around in disgust for the odor, or just the plain uncleanliness of the place. Soiled toilet seats, paper towels on the floor, sanitary napkins behind the toilet seats, and often wonder if WOMEN are using this bathroom. Because women are mostly more clean then men.

Now, I’m not trying to offend anyone, BUT if you don’t want to contribute, then don’t. If you don’t want to use the products, don’t. If you don’t want to use the bathroom on this floor period, then don’t. BUT, I’d like to go in there and NOT have to hold my breath or search out another bathroom.

Once again, for those of us who appreciate your efforts, THANK YOU Soap Lady #2 and Soap Lady # 1!!

Soap Lady # 1 and I initially thought of the idea to supply the women’s bathroom with hand soap and other items, simply because of the daily condition of the 6th floor bathroom. There were many a day that one or both of us walked in to the bathroom only to have to turn right around and seek out another one on a different floor. The odor was appalling. Women leave their tampons on the back of the toilet seats, urinate on the toilet seat as well as the surrounding floor area and leave it for the next person to clean up. When we tried adding a few baskets of potpourri to the bathroom, we found them on the floor, potpourri scattered. I refuse to have to hold my breath to use the bathroom!! At last count, there were 105 women on the 6th floor……that’s a lot of women using one bathroom. Just do your part to help keep it in a sanitary condition. Have some respect.

I thank Soap Lady # 1 for taking the time and energy to collect for the bathroom soaps, drive to the store to buy the soap (many times using her own money to be able to buy the amount of soaps that we need for the month) and carry 30 - 40 bottles of soap and renuzits to ODH once a month. The only goal in mind here was to make the 6th floor women’s bathroom a little more presentable and fresh.

So, to those of you who do not wish to participate in the soap collection…….don’t. Don’t use the soft soap, don’t give any money, don’t use the 6th floor bathroom and most of all, don’t thank Soap Lady #1 for trying to make your work day a more pleasant one!

Good morning everyone,
I think it is important to say that those of us who were satisfied just to use the soap provided by ODH were in no way implying that we don’t appreciate the efforts of others to make things nice. At least I can say that in my own behalf, and feel certain that others agree. If there is a need regarding that bathroom, perhaps we should take it up with whomever is the appropriate person or persons in the building & deal with it at the dept. level instead of trying to solve it among ourselves. No one need feel unappreciated as I’m sure that was not the intent.

I would agree with XXX. You cannot please everyone and just because a two people disagree on an action doesn’t imply any level of disrespect. It is what it is – and that is a choice.

I use the ODH provided soap and that is my choice. I use my own lotion and when the bathroom is terrible I go somewhere else.

I wish that some would be more responsible while using the public bathroom, but I realize that everyone wasn’t raised to do the right thing or to behave like a lady (have respect for themselves and others).

In closing, please remove my name from your distribution list and thank you for your thoughtfulness.

This morning it is my neighbor with the legs talking about how she can suck her own toes (if she were the yoga type this might not seem remarkable, but she doesn't quite fit that description).

This is a post I wrote for the YVO blog, but I feel like it belongs here too.

Hey Folks,

I'm back from Canada and excited to give you this report about the screening of 20 Straws at the OutRights Conference.

Here goes:

There were about 30 people at the presentation, I presented as part of a workshop called Creating Social Change through the Arts. Most of the people in the workshop were over 30, though there were several younger folks, two of whom were tranny.

One of the people who was really moved by your video was a 22 year old gender refugee from Nicaragua. He has been in Canada for two years and is facing deportation. He is fighting for refugee status based on the persecution he will face in Nicaragua for being gay. If this doesn't give you an indication of how far and wide your work can reach, nothing will.

There was a loud applause after the screening of the video, followed by a Q&A. I was very honored to be an Ambassador for YVO, maybe we can put that on the back of my t-shirt (as per Liv's suggestion!). The comments went like this:

Praise for the fact that it did not feel "totally American." In other words, people felt like the stories were universal, something anyone who is dealing with sexuality could relate to.

More praise for the fact that the video presented some of the positive outcomes of being young, gay and out. The woman who made those comments said she gets tired of seeing such a focus on the negative and that is was refreshing to see you all so happy and well adjusted even though it is clear you have had to deal with such homophobia.

People were curious to know what impact the creation of the video had on your lives. I hope I am not overstepping here, but I told them that overall, YVO participants now seemed more confident, and eager to be a part of creating change.

On another note, I sold 2 t-shirts and 9 DVDs. AND, I put a DVD in the hand of Judy Shepard, the mother of Matthew Shepard. She has started a foundation in remembrance of her son and they have a large youth focus, so I thought she should have a copy. She gave a very moving presentation about the urgent need for all people to accept diversity on all levels and to join in the fight to change the repressive Bush regime. I wish you could have heard her talk, she is one powerful woman. She had some especially interesting perspectives on the ways religion is misued to justify the oppression of GLBT people.

OK, that's the skinny. You all were missed and there was much buzz about the video and it's powerful impact. Another reason to be proud.

Snowgirl Anatomy

There's a blizzard here today and I am home with my four year old niece because the daycare is closed. In old-school snow day fashion we got all bundled up and went outside to make a snowgirl (snowgirl because I am a feminist and clearly not all snow characters are male). The snow wasn't packing very well, so she's more like a snow blob, but we were pleased with the finished product.

Our little snowgirl is fitted with all the requisite accessories- carrot nose, button eyes and tophat replaced with punked out hair. Before she was complete, however, Amoreh informed me that "all she needs now is a bagina."

Audition?

In two hours from now I will be co-presenting a workshop on Audio Documentary to 60 professors, students, Kiplinger Fellows, NPR buffs, etc. at Ohio State University.
This workshop evolved out of my attendance to the Third Coast Audio Festival in Chicago last October. As a result of this workshop, I got a call from the Radio Manager at WOSU last week. He was trying to figure out who I was since I am listed as an Audio Producer. YIKES. ("Remember the Artist's Way" I keep telling myself).

When we talked he asked me if I knew about the digital media center at COSI (a joint project of COSI and WOSU). He said they are trying to do this kind of teaching and outreach there. "Duh, of course I know about that place, it's my dream job," I thought. We talked briefly, he told me he would be at the workshop and looked forward to seeing what we did with it. I hung up, assembled my resume with audio samples and delivered to WOSU 30 minutes later.

I am NERVOUS right now because this workshop feels like an audition. I feel like it could get me somewhere in this field, if the right person likes what we are doing. At the same time it scares me because I am so excited and eager to work in this field and I am afraid it could be another kick ass presentation that leads nowhere.

Plus, I love to teach and I don't get to do it enough anymore.

Ugh, mixed emotions.

I'm off....

External Genitalia and 60,000 miles

We just got back from viewing Bodies The Exhibition at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. It was an amazing exhibit overall, totally fascinating though a bit unsettling for those who get queasy at the site of blood and internal organs. The exhibit peels back the skin (literally) on donated or unclaimed "John and Jane Does" to reveal muscles, digestives systems, organ functions, veins, arteries, etc.

You name it, if it is part of the human body, they have preserved it, and it is on display.

The fact that I found most astounding was that each of our bodies are home to 60,000 miles of blood vessels. How incredible is that?

On another note, I did have one beef with the exhibit and that was the fact that the female bodies on display (of which there were very few) were labeled with the words "external genitalia" to describe the entire vaginal region. Rather than using what I understand to be the correct anatomical descriptors "labia minora, labia majora, and clitoris," everything was lumped together and described as "external genitalia." This might not be such a bother if the penis were also labeled "external genitalia," but alas, it was labeled with the big P word. And to top it off, the function of this "external genitalia" on the female body was also left unexplained, whereas "with stimulation" the penis was said to "fill with blood, increase in size and become erect."

Hhmmff, the last time I checked, the clitoris did that too.

Indeed, I am forever the feminist in search of misogyny in everyday life, but I can't help it, it is these kinds of exclusions that contribute to the lack of knowledge and understanding about the female body. The fact that these kinds of editorial decisions were made in an educational exhibit of this nature is like adding insult to injury.

So, suffice it to say that the exhibit was truly fabulous, but that it also reminded me that there is still much work to be done. Thank goodness for people like Eve Ensler.

Color and Electricity.

Some cool pics snapped by my sis in Vegas at the theater where the new Cirque du Soleil show, LOVE, is playing. Speaking of love, I love the colors.

And, one interesting fact about my visit so far. There seems to be an extremely large amount of static electricity in the air out here. I am sure that if Jan read my blog he would have the accurate scientific answer for me about what is causing it, but as my sister reminded me, we are surrounded by millions of lights every second of the day out here. Talk about light pollution, it is unreal.
